ScarWork
There is more going on with many scars (even if they appear well healed and/or discreet), than meets the eye. Scarring is vital and necessary in our body’s healing process, be it from surgery, injury or infection. However, as a natural result of this, beneath the surface of the skin, adhesions can form.
These adhesions have a similar affect to glue, penetrating superficially to deep, in a 3D pattern, in all directions. They connect different parts of the body which aren’t normally connected. This can significantly restrict natural movement, not only between muscles and bones but organs, blood vessels and nerves.
Over time, our bodies do their best to compensate for these restrictions. Often, this happens so subtley and slowly we are not aware of it. It is only when the tension is released, that we realise how hard our bodies are working to ‘hold’ or compensate for the surgery, injury or trauma.
ScarWork is not massage, but a whole approach of its own, developed by Sharon Wheeler from California, over her many years as a massage therapist. It’s a gentle treatment which works to integrate different types of scar tissue back into the fabric of your body.
It works to make the scar softer and sit ‘more at home’ in the surrounding tissue. As the area is rehydrated, the tissue is made more adaptable and resilient. It can help to even out the texture of the scar and remove tension, helping to improve both how it looks and feels. This not only assists any further healing but also enables your body to adapt in a more efficient way to the injury.
I’ve personally experienced the truly profound benefits, which has led me to complete all the available training in its entirety.
ScarWork FAQs
Does it hurt?
The techniques are very gentle. There is no attempt at ‘breaking down’ the scarring. In fact, most people find it very relaxing.
How soon after surgery can I receive ScarWork?
Your scar must be well healed, at least 4-6 weeks from surgery. If you have been under medical supervision you will need to be discharged prior to commencing treatment.
What kind of scars can you work on?
All kinds of scars can be worked on- surgical, keloid, burns etc. I do not work on scars with associated active cancer.
I’ve had my scar for years, can ScarWork still help?
Nothing is lost by leaving scars longer, scars can be effectively treated at any age, and even older scars respond well.
My ‘record’ is a scar that has been present for 60 years!
